Why the June New Moon is called the New Buck Moon
In 2022 the new moon that begins the lunar cycle for the July full moon, called the Full Buck Moon, will occur at the very end of June. This is one of the few New Moon Names not easily guessed. The July Full Moon is named for the time of year when the antlers start to appear on bucks (male deer).
Each year depending on when the July Full Moon occurs, the New Buck Moon will occur in either late June to Mid-July.
Which season includes the New Buck Moon?
Depending on the year, the New Buck Moon will typically be the first new moon of the summer season. Occasionally it will actually be the last new moon of the spring season, sometimes as the season’s third or fourth new moon.
The New Buck Moon will not be a seasonal black moon. When it occurs in the spring, it’s the last new moon of the season. There won’t be time for another new moon to come after it before spring ends. For the summer season, it will be the first new moon. A new moon later in the season could be a seasonal black moon.
When is the New Buck Moon in 2022?
The 2022 New Buck Moon will be on Tuesday June 28, 2022 10:52 PM ET or Wednesday June 29, 2022 3:52 AM UTC. This will be the first new moon of the Summer 2022 season as it occurs almost a week after the Summer Solstice.
